Arthritis Foundation Guidelines on CBD

October 9, 2019

The purported pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties of the cannabis plant have been claimed for millenia. Indigenous to Asia, archaeologists have found evidence of cannabis use for both its medicinal and recreational properties across the continent dating back to 8000BC.

Research into the effects and benefits of CBD and other products derived from the Cannabis plant are still in their infancy, and despite the overwhelming amount of anecdotal evidence there is still very little scientific conclusions about the health benefits of the plant. Studies in animals have suggested that CBD is beneficial in relieving pain and inflammation, but these have not been validated in human studies.

Despite this, the Arthritis Foundation has recently issued new guidance on CBD for adult arthritis patients, citing the group as one of the biggest buyers of CBD worldwide.

Arthritis is a condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint or joints. According to the NHS more than 10 million people in the UK suffer from arthritis, with the two most common types of arthritis being Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Although it is often associated with old age, arthritis can affect people of all ages including children.

As one of the world’s largest organisations representing those suffering from arthritis, the USA-based Arthritis Foundation welcomes “new treatment options because no single drug, supplement or therapy works for everyone.” and says “The more options available, the likelier it is that more people will benefit.” while urging the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expedite their studies into CBD products.

The key takeaways from the Arthritis Foundation’s guidance on CBD are:

  • CBD may help with arthritis-related symptoms, such as pain, insomnia and anxiety, but there have been no rigorous clinical studies in people with arthritis to confirm this.
  • While no major safety issues have been found with CBD when taken in moderate doses, potential drug interactions have been identified.
  • CBD should never be used to replace disease-modifying drugs that help prevent permanent joint damage in inflammatory types of arthritis.
