It feels like every day we’re seeing people taking pampering their pets to a new level, from expensive food to pushing small dogs around in a pram, and sending their pets to day spas.
But, the latest thing is definitely something we can get behind – CBD for pets. And there’s lots of options out there: infused pet food, gummies and other treats, specialist oils, air diffusers and even pet beds infused with CBD.
But how does CBD affect our pets?
Much like human beings, other mammals have an Endocannabinoid System which performs the same function as it does for ourselves, it helps regulate the body and promote a sense of balance. Our pet’s Endocannabinoid System helps to regulate their mood and their sensitivity to pain amongst other things, which has lead to pet owners using CBD to treat anxiety, arthritis and other pain issues, seizures, stress, and nausea.
What’s more, CBD is completely safe for pets as there are no known side effects for mammals, compared to the myriad of potential side effects of other treatments.
Like with us humans, working out the CBD dosage for your pets can take a little bit of figuring out. It is best to start off with one or two drops of oil twice a day, if you’re feeling brave try putting it under your pet’s tongue, as we would take it, or if that’s not possible add the drops to their food.
Still not convinced?
Here’s a few words from Josh, who started giving his Australian Terrier-Cross, Haplo, CBD after he had become anxious and stressed out following a family move from Scotland to California.
“CBD really helps Haplo. In situations where he’d usually be super stressed out and anxiety, instead he’s mellow. He’ll still play and be sociable but he just isn’t as bothered by noises and such. He used to be really nervous around other dogs, but now he’s a lot more relaxed when we’re out walking, he’s still a little nervous but at least now we feel confident that he’ll be okay when we see other dogs.”
